Rising Again: Finding Hope When Chronic Illness Changes Everything
Share
As I sit and ponder what my life’s become,
I wonder what went wrong… how did all of this become?
Was it trauma?
Sadness?
Anger?
Or simply never learning how to let go?
Was it grief?
Or just plain… I don’t know.
The further back I look,
the more hurt I can see.
But then I also see the strength —
the courage that kept making me stand back up.
Every single time.
No matter how hard life hit,
I found a way to keep fighting.
And maybe that’s the hardest part of all —
the not knowing.
Waking up each day wondering:
Can I walk today?
Am I pain free?
Can I tolerate lights, sounds, smells?
Can I string a sentence together?
Does my skin burn?
Are my eyes sore?
Do I have a headache?
Can I brush my hair?
Raise my arms?
Eat food?
Shower?
People look at you and don’t understand what’s wrong.
They keep asking why.
“What’s wrong now?”
Like… here we go again.
It’s the never-ending doctors.
The endless monitoring.
Being passed from one specialist to the next because it’s “outside their field.”
It’s exhausting.
You begin to feel like a burden.
The pain.
The tiredness.
The new symptoms arriving daily like unwanted visitors.
And I know this sadness doesn’t only affect me.
I see it in the people around me too.
They grieve the person I once was.
The go-getter.
The strong one.
The stubborn girl who pushed through everything.
But the truth is…
I grieve her too.
The “once was.”
The “what used to be.”
But I promise — to myself and to the people I love —
that I will rise again.
Like a phoenix from the ashes,
just as I’ve done many times before.
Reborn stronger.
This is not my forever.
My real vibe is still to come.
And it will be my best yet.
Because somehow, through all of this,
I’ve discovered a new kind of strength.
A resilience buried deep within me that I never knew existed.
And I refuse to let this invisible illness take everything from me.
It can have the old version of me.
But watch what rises next.
Today was a hard day.
So I came to my favourite place on earth.
I felt the sand between my toes.
I heard the roar of the ocean.
And little by little,
my body softened.
Released.
Recharged.
The waves seemed to whisper:
Let it go.
But don’t let it win.
And in that moment,
I remembered something important:
Nothing can stop me forever.
For the first time in a while…
Today, I felt free.
I will rise again.
