7 Fibromyalgia Flare Warning Signs I Notice Before a Flare

7 Fibromyalgia Flare Warning Signs I Notice Before a Flare

One of the biggest things living with fibromyalgia has taught me is that my body usually whispers before it screams.

The problem is that I don't always listen.

For a long time, I would push through the warning signs because there was always something that needed doing. Housework, appointments, errands, work, family life. I convinced myself I could keep going just a little longer.

Sometimes I could.

Other times a fibromyalgia flare would hit and suddenly I was dealing with exhaustion, pain, brain fog and symptoms that seemed to come from nowhere.

Over time, I've started noticing that my body usually gives me clues before a flare begins.

The difficult part is recognising those signs early enough and actually listening to them.

These are the fibromyalgia warning signs I personally notice before a flare.

1. Brain Fog Gets Worse

Brain fog is one of my earliest warning signs.

Words become harder to find.

I walk into rooms and forget why I'm there.

Conversations become difficult to follow.

Sometimes it feels like my thoughts are moving through mud.

When my brain fog suddenly becomes worse than usual, I now see it as my body asking me to slow down.

2. Lights, Sounds and Everything Feel Too Much

Another sign I notice is sensory overload.

Lights seem brighter.

Sounds feel louder.

Too many conversations become overwhelming.

Even normal everyday noise can suddenly feel like my brain is struggling to process it all.

When this happens, I often find myself seeking quieter spaces, dimmer lighting and less stimulation.

3. The Exhaustion Changes

Fibromyalgia fatigue isn't simply being tired.

It's a deep, heavy exhaustion that rest doesn't always fix.

Sometimes I wake up already exhausted.

Other times I feel my energy suddenly disappear during the day.

Small tasks begin to feel much harder than they should.

When even simple jobs start feeling overwhelming, I know I need to listen.

4. My Pain Levels Increase

My body often starts warning me through pain.

More aching.

More tenderness.

Burning sensations.

Increased muscle pain.

Sometimes it feels like my entire body is working harder than it should.

Pain that suddenly increases without an obvious reason is often one of my biggest clues that a flare may be coming.

5. Headaches Start Creeping In

Headaches are another sign I pay attention to.

Sometimes it's tension.

Sometimes it's pressure.

Sometimes it develops into a migraine.

When headaches appear alongside my other symptoms, I know I need to take things more gently.

6. Dizziness or Feeling Off Balance

There are times when I feel lightheaded or slightly unsteady.

Almost like my body is struggling to keep up.

Sometimes it feels like I'm moving through water.

Other times it's simply a strange disconnected feeling.

Dizziness can be frustrating, but I've learnt not to ignore it.

7. Everything Feels Bigger

One of the hardest symptoms to explain is emotional overwhelm.

Things that normally wouldn't bother me suddenly feel enormous.

Small problems feel bigger.

Noise feels harder.

Stress feels heavier.

I become more emotional, more sensitive and more easily overwhelmed.

I've realised that this isn't weakness.

It's often my body telling me that it's running low on resources.

My Body Whispers Before It Screams

One of my favourite reminders is this:

My body whispers before it screams.

The warning signs aren't there to punish me.

They're there to help me.

The earlier I notice them, the better chance I have of slowing down before a full fibromyalgia flare takes over.

That doesn't mean I always listen.

I'm still learning.

I'm still stubborn sometimes.

I still push through when I shouldn't.

But I'm getting better at recognising the clues my body gives me.

What I Do When I Notice The Signs

When I notice several of these warning signs together, I try to:

  • Reduce my schedule.
  • Lower lights and noise.
  • Rest earlier.
  • Drink more water.
  • Choose easier meals.
  • Say no to things that can wait.
  • Give myself permission to slow down.

Sometimes it helps.

Sometimes a flare still happens.

But listening earlier usually makes a difference.

Final Thoughts

Fibromyalgia looks different for everyone.

Your warning signs may not look exactly like mine.

The important thing is learning your own patterns.

Keeping track of symptoms can help you identify what happens before a flare begins.

The more we understand our bodies, the better we can support them.

And sometimes the kindest thing we can do is listen when our body whispers instead of waiting until it screams.

Looking for a Gentle Way to Track Your Symptoms?

One of the reasons I created My Health Companion was because I realised how easy it is to overlook the warning signs until a flare has already taken over.

Tracking symptoms, patterns and triggers can help us better understand our bodies and recognise the clues they give us.

My Health Companion was designed to help people living with chronic illness track symptoms, identify patterns and prepare for appointments.

Because sometimes the clues are there — we just need somewhere to notice them.
